The next two articles show some applications of waves. Go to the page of the Center for Subsurface Sensing & Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) and answer the following questions: 7. State two applications of subsurface imaging that are mentioned. 8. What are the three research thrusts discussed? Links are provided to multiple federal government departments or agencies each having multiple labs or centers. 9. Which one of those organizations is most interesting to you? 10. For the organization that you chose, explore the various labs or centers of that organization. Which two labs or centers or areas of focus is most interesting to you? PHY 2049 IConnections with Physics Reading Questions Name All the links to websites and webarticles for this assignment are on the Canvas page \"Some Applications of Physics and the Multidisciplinary Nature of lComplex Problems." The rst two articles show a close connection between computing systems and the physical world. Go to the I T r-Pl: i of st ms W it and answer the following questions: 1. What is HIST? {put cursor on NEST at the top left ofthc screen for the answer) 2. What is CPS? 3. State two applications in this article that will be advanced using CPS. 4. State two other phrases related to CPS technologies. Go to the web article Warm W and answer the following questions: 5. State two applications of CPS that are mentioned on this website that were not mentioned on the previous website. I5. If you were going to work in one of these application area, which would you choose? Some of these systems may be directly related to your career while others may not. Many real world complex problems are multi-disciplinary in natural. Some physics and biology or chemistry are combined, Often the physical sciences rely on mathematics, statistics, and computing systems. Multiple websites have descriptions of these applications: (privacy policies links are available in the orientation module) Cyber-physical systems/Smart Systems/Internet of Things The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has webpage for its loT Devices and Infrastructure Group & which discusses Cyber-Physical Systems. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has the web-article Cyber-Physical Systems: Enabling a Smart and Connected World e . Wikipedia has an article on smart systems , computational science " Subsurface sensing and imaging The National Science Foundation has a webpage for The Center for Subsurface Sensing & Imaging Systems (CenSSIS) which describes diverse problems, similar solutions. Wikipedia has articles on imaging & which discusses parts of the imaging chain, subfields within imaging, and various methodologies used. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency & (DARPA) has multiple research programs . National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a has multiple Centers and Facilities . National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) 2 has multiple labs . National Institutes of Health (NIH) @ has many Institutes, Centers, and Offices . National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)_ _ has nine key areas of focus 2 . U.S. Department of Energy_(DOE 2 ) has multiple national labs .Some Applications of Physics and the Multidisciplinary Nature of Complex Problems Physics helps us understand both natural systems and engineered systems. Some natural systems include atoms and molecules, biological cells, rocks, people, trees, the earth and its oceans and atmosphere, the solar system, and the universe. How did I order these natural systems? Engineered systems include communication and transportation systems, medical devices, military weapon systems, Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) and Data Acquisition and Control (DAC) systems. Often data acquisition and control systems are parts of other systems and enable those other systems to be "smart systems." Sensors measure various quantities in the real world (such as position, velocity, force, temperature studied in physics 1) and convert those quantities to electrical signals (voltage and currents that we study in physics 2) that can be sent a computer. The computer can make decisions and send other signals to actuators which can change the real world (open a door, ring a bell, etc). The figure below shows a simplified block diagram of a cyber-physical system. Signal Sensor 1 Conditioning Actuator 1 Signal Embedded Sensor 2 Conditioning computer Actuator 2 Signal Sensor 3 Conditioning Wikipedia's article on data acquisition c shows a block diagram of such a system (similar but different than the one shown above) and discusses various aspects of the system including programming languages used
