The Operations Manager at Fat-E has been looking for a new warehouse space to either expand into or consolidate all of Fat-Es requirements into one building. They have expanded into the adjacent units at their current location however there are no other units available in the foreseeable future. The layout includes a production area (that is going to require more future space), a set of offices (that will also require more space as they grow), and the warehouse where raw materials and finished goods products are stored. The warehouse layout includes a traditional racking system that can store single pallets in three levels (on the ground, the first tier and then the second tier). The warehouse is setup with ten foot aisles to accommodate the use of forklifts loading and unloading the racking. The Operations Manager sees two possible alternatives find one large warehouse that can accommodate all of the operations including production, warehousing and the office space or, alternatively, find a public warehouse that can take on the warehousing requirements and use the current space to expand production and the office space.

Supplier Selection Fat-E has decided to begin selling service to All-Trade Outdoor (ATO) who is a national retailer that requires large volumes sent to their distribution centres located in Kelowna BC and Montreal QC. Fat-E will be required to ship in TL quantity to both locations and the CEO has asked that you source a TL provider(s). The CEO has also reiterated their commitment in their company vision to remain ethical and sustainable and has asked that this also form a part of the decision making process. In discussion with the CEO, you have discovered that Fat-E does not have a formal ethics policy at the company. Question 1. Detail the factors that you would use in comparing truckload companies against each other and develop a proposed weight or ranking of the factors according to what you consider to be their level of importance in selecting a new carrier.

Question 2. Consider and discuss the potential areas that a new ethical purchasing policy needs to address. These include: a) the rationale for why Fat-E should have a corporate ethical policy, b) who the policy should be protecting, and c) what ethical criteria should guide decisions on ethical conduct. The CEO is not requesting you develop the actual policy at this time, rather consider the specific areas and discuss each in detail. Your Assignment Your report should be approximately 1,500 words, and the structure should include a brief introduction to your challenges, your analysis and your recommendation organized separately for each challenge, and finally a conclusion.
