Hypothesis: Low pay is a major contributer to the issue being face within the Pharmacy department.
The STEPS:
During this phase of the project, you will PROPOSE the steps you would take to dig in to find out more information
about the problem at your workplace and the methods/tools you would use to carry out those steps. In other words,
we are not asking you to actually undertake an investigation in your organization. Rather in this stage of the
capstone you will come up with a detailed plan as to how you would--if hired as a consultant or change agent--
document and look further into the problem.
Remember, right now you do not actually know how widespread the problem is, where in
the organization it surfaces, how it actually affects people and/or organizational functioning,
what people across the organization actually think about it, and whether this problem has
been dealt with already in the organization.
Your job in this stage of the project is to show that you can come up with a plan about how
you would find out the answers to all of these questions.
In this segment of the project you will:
1. Propose methods you would use to learn about the perspectives of workplace problem from people who
work/and or interact with employees and/or leaders at the organization:
a. How might you to seek various points of view from pertinent stakeholders regarding this problem?
How would you find out how each group frame or defines the problem? How will you decide who to
contact to learn about the problem?
b. How many people would you gather information from? How many would be enough...too little,
excessive?
c. What research method/s will you use to gather information about the workplace problem? (survey,
interviews, observations, focus groups, document review, etc.?)
d. What kinds of questions would you ask? Would questions be the same for all employees or other
stakeholders you approachor how might they differ?
e. How would you propose to approach people who (for whatever reason) may be difficult to approach
(e.g., too busy, never in the office, likely to resist talking)
2. Propose methods you would use to learn about the scope of the workplace problem:
a. How might you get information about how widespread the problem is...unit-wide? Between groups of
people at different levels of the organization? across the organization?
b. How might you get information to estimate how many people are currently affected by this problem
in (or outside) the organization?
c. How might you ask about the number of people that have been affected by this problem in the past,
and for how long has this problem been going on?
3. Propose methods you would use to learn about the consequences of the workplace problem:
a. How might you gather data to determine the harms (or other kinds of impact) the workplace problem
has on individuals, to groups of employees/leaders, to the organization as a whole, to the ability of
the organization to meet its goals? (e.g., productivity, 'bottom-line')

4. Propose methods you would use to learn about previous efforts to address the workplace problem:
a. How will you find out what, if anything, is documented about the prior existence of this problem?
b. How would you find out if anyone raised an issue with this problem previously...and where was the
problem reportedand to whom? What happened as a result of the report?
c. How do you plan to learn about any interventions or attempts at resolving the problem in the past
and how they worked?
5. Propose methods you would use to learn about resources the organization has already to address the
workplace problem:
a. How will you research policies that might be in place at the organization already to address the
problem?
b. How would you find out what training or employee relations resources are already available in the
organization to help with this problem?
c. How will you learn about any incentives/rewards or disincentives/sanctions the organization already
offers to help resolve the workplace problem?
