The percentages of low birth weight infants in various countries around the world are contained in the data set unicef.dta. The measurements themselves are saved under the variable name lowbwt. Open the data set in Stata. (File/Open) a. Describe the data using the describe data command (Data/Describe Data/Describe variables in memory). How many variables are in this data set? Are the variables nominal, ordinal, or continuous? How many observations are contained in the data set? b. Construct a box plot for the percentages of low birth weight infants (Graphics/Box plot). Label Q1, Median, Q3, and the IQR. c. Display the percentages of low birth weight infants using a histogram (Graphics/ Histogram). Do you find this graph to be more or less informative than the box plot? Explain. d. Do the data appear to be skewed? If so, are they skewed to the right or left? e. Do the data contain any outlying observations of percentage of low birth weight? If so, to which countries do they belong? Hint: Sort the data in the Data Browser f. Calculate the mean, median and standard deviation of the percentage of low birth weight. (Statistics/Summaries,tables&tests/Summary and descriptive statistics/Summary statistics.) Hint: Use "Display additional statistics" option) Then, make a new variable called Change which is the change in life expectancy from 1960 to 1992. Data/Create or change variables/Create new variable Type "Change" in the "Variable name" box Type life92-life60 in the "specify a value or an expression" box Hit OK Note that you could have also typed the following into the Command window "generate change = life92-life60" g. For which countries did life expectancy decrease? Which country had the highest increase in life expectancy?
