The Pregnancy Discrimination Act offers protections to employees against discrimination while pregnant. An employer cannot refuse to hire a pregnant woman because of her pregnancy or a pregnancy related condition. This act defines pregnancy as a temporary disability that requires accommodation. It must be treated the same way as other temporary illnesses. The Pregnancy act covers private employers with at least 15 or more employees including federal or state agencies.

As a person who started a new job with a new company when I was 7 months pregnant, I worried that the interviewer would see me when I walked into the room and automatically make his decision about whether to hire me right then and there. I was ultimately hired, because I was the best person for the job and the company made accommodations for me. For example, my training was planned around my doctor's appointments and exceptions were made during the 90-day probationary period.
