The present work investigates the characterisation of a liquid mixture consisting of 45 mol % n-pentane and 55 mol % n-hexane fed to a distillation column. The vapour stream exiting the column, containing 97 mol% pentane and the remaining hexane, is fed to a total condenser. Half of the condensate is recirculated to the top of the column, while the remainder is extracted as the final product at a flow rate of 85 kmol/hr. The overhead product contains 90% of the pentane that was fed into the column. The liquid stream exiting the bottom of the column is fed into an evaporator where part of the stream is vaporised. The vapour thus produced is recycled back to the bottom of the column, while the liquid is also collected as a separate product. Perform the material balance and determine the molar flow rate of the feed stream and characterise the molar flow rate and composition of the liquid sump stream.
