[8 marks Scenario A: ABC Engineering is considering the implementation of a project to replace one of its production lines with a new automated line. Maintenance costs of the existing line have risen 30% over the last year and breakdowns now occur at least once a week with some products now being delivered to customers late. The Production Director has requested the change and it is envisaged that this replacement would take 4 to 6 months to complete by the selected supplier Autoprod Limited, at a cost of 250,000. If this change is not made customers could place orders elsewhere or the company shareholders could request that production be outsourced instead. It is envisaged that the new line would increase productivity by 10% and reduce lead-times by 2 hours per product. The Managing Director of the company is prepared to provide a budget of 275,000 and a lead- time of 5 months, but no fall in overall production or customer service may be allowed.
