The process of burning sulfur, which is a process used in the petrochemical industry, will be diagrammed. In the petrochemical industry, sulfur is used in various components and can often be burned to produce energy or act as a reactant.
One hundred kilograms per hour of sulphur of 95% purity is burned in dry air. The gas leaving the burner containing 15%SO2,5%02 and 80%N2 enters a converter after mixing with secondary air. The gas leaving the converter has the following analysis: SO2,4.5%;02,7.5% and N2,88.0%. The converter gas is passed through an absorber so that 95% of the S03 in the gas is absorbed in 98%H2S04 to produce 100% sulphuric acid. Determine the following:
(a) The volume of secondary air (in m3) supplied per hour at 100kPa and 300K
(b) The mass of 98%H2SO4(in kilograms) supplied per hour
(c) The mass of 100% acid (in kilograms) produced per hour
