The pros of bringing manufacturing back to the US outweigh the cons. I personally think the pandemic has made us think about reshoring critical supplies like masks, hand sanitizers, painkillers, etc. back in the US. Our President Biden signed an executive order back in 2022 directing an all-of-government approach to assess vulnerabilities in - and strengthening the resilience of - the United States' critical supply chains. Within six months of taking office, the Administration completed a comprehensive review of the supply chains for four critical products, identified solutions to secure those supply chains against a wide range of risks and vulnerabilities, and established a first-of-its-kind Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force (SCDTF) to address the challenges arising from a pandemic-affected economic recovery. These actions are contributing to a historic recovery in American manufacturing and industrial strength. During President Biden's first year in office, the economy added 367,000 manufacturing jobs - the most in nearly 30 years - manufacturing as a share of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) returned to pre-pandemic levels, and companies have announced major new investments in American manufacturing (2022, February 24).

American manufacturers are increasingly bringing production back to the US to reduce their reliance on global supply chains that proved vulnerable to disruption such as the pandemic. For example, General Motors announced in January 2022 it would spend $7 billion on four plants in Michigan. Last year it spent almost $40 billion buying parts from some 5,600 US suppliers (Mann, J). Even though it won't be easy to re-shore for certain companies based on what industries they are in. In the long run, it makes more sense and will be beneficial to our economy.

One huge consequence of reshoring back in the US would be the complex interdependence that Shih mentioned in the article (Shih, 2020). At my current job, when we go to our suppliers asking for pricing and lead time. They often must go to the manufacturers and ask for those details and get back to us. Once we receive the information and pass it down to our customers, if our customers do not react quickly and place an order it might lead to the part now being out of stock and having a longer lead time.
