The purpose of this assignment is for students to become familiar with the Formula for Understanding the Process of Crisis Formation as well as the Formula to Increase Functioning. The ABC Model from the textbook and concepts learned in class will also be applied to a crisis related topic of their particular interest.

Instructions: Choose a crisis situation and create a scenario or use a case from the textbook. Apply the ABC Model in order to demonstrate understanding of this approach to crisis intervention. Please refer to Table 3.2 in the textbook to ensure you cover all of the components (Reminder: there is a copy of the textbook on reserve at the library

1. Using Part A of the ABC Model, identify each of the basic attending skills and how you would use these to develop and maintain rapport with the client.

1. Define each of the four types of therapeutic interaction statements and choose two types that you would use with this client; clearly labeling the type of statement and statement itself by indicating exactly what words you would use

Using Part C of the Model, explore what the client is currently doing to cope, what they have tried in the past to cope and explain any coping strategies that you could present as an option to assist them. Include at least one referral to a specific community agency indicating the name of the agency in your home community and how this would be beneficial to the client

1. Referring to the Formula for Increasing Functioning, describe in detail how the client would recover from the crisis event

1. Conclude the assignment with your comments about how exploring this case scenario will better equip you to help others in crisis.
