The reaction of iodide ions with persulfate (peroxydisulfate ions) is a classic reaction used to study the laws of chemical kinetics. The iodide ion becomes oxidized and the products of the reaction are I2 and the sulphate ion, SO42. Write the balanced chemical reaction from the description in the previous paragraph. Below the chemical equation draw the Lewis structure for persulfate and sulfate ions. Include the equation and dot structures in your prelab. This is reaction 1. The rate of a chemical reaction is affected by concentration, temperature, and activation energy. a. Increasing temperature increases the reaction rate. b. Increasing concentration of a reactant increases the reaction rate if the reactant is part of the slow step in the reaction mechanism. c. Activation energy is barrier to change. Increasing activation energy decreases reaction rate. Make a diagram (or diagrams) that shows the effect of concentration, temperature, and activation energy on reaction rate. Submit as part of your prelab. Reaction Details Starch combines with iodine producing a starch- I2 complex that is blue-black in color. This chemical information will be used in this experiment to determine the rate of the reaction between iodide ion and persulfate ion. Using Reaction 1, and the behavior of iodine in the presence of starch, what do you think would happen if we prepared a solution of iodide ion, and a solution of persulfate ion of a given concentration, added a starch solution to one of these two ions solution, then mixed them together? Submit the answer to this question as pat of your prelab
