The Research and Development (R & D) department at a sports manufacturer has developed three new baseball bat designs, and it is trying to decide which design to give to the marketing department. The three designs are the Aeronaught 3000, the Big Banger, and the Curveball Master. For simplicity, it refers to the three designs as design A, design B, and design C.
As part of the testing out of the three designs, the team selects a group of participants and monitors their use of the bats. Each participant provides data for the test by going through an extensive use of each bat in the following manner:
On a baseball field, a qualified baseball pitcher is going to pitch to the participant 10 times for each different bat (for a total of 30 pitches per participant). The participant will swing at the pitch and try to hit the ball as far as they can.
For each bat, the farthest of the 10 hits is recorded to the nearest inch. Also, for each bat, the number of times the participant manages to hit the ball at all is recorded.
After the pitching, the participant is asked to give each bat a rating, ranging from 'Extremely disliked', to 'Disliked', to 'Liked', to 'Extremely liked'. Each participant is also asked to nominate which of the three bats is their favorite.
So, from each participant, a variety of data are gathered. Each participant provides:
- three pieces of data in relation to their farthest hit for each of the three bats
- three pieces of data in relation to their number of successful swings for each bat
- three pieces of data in relation to their rating of each of the three bats
- one piece of data in relation to their nominated favorite bat
The R & D department gather all the data together from all of the participants.
The following two statements refer to the data from item number 1 in the above list. That is, the statements are about the data referring to the farthest hit pitch for each bat. Complete each statement correctly.
a)This is an example of(categorical or numerical) data.
b)This set of data is being measured(for a discrete variable or for a continuous variable or on an ordinal scale or on a nominal scale).
