The scene: you work in logistics for Eno Hammocks corporate. You’ve done such a great job figuring out where to locate facilities and which suppliers to use, they’ve given you a special assignment: design and manage their new warehouse that’s opening just outside Greenville.
a) Receiving zone: Every week, the warehouse is expected to receive 15,000 pallets of product. Trucks may deliver Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm and take an average of 13.2 minutes to unload. Each truck delivers an average of 22.3 pallets. How many docking doors should you install?
b) Storage zone: Your warehouse will handle 3 types of products: Single-person hammocks, two-person hammocks, and hammock straps. You are trying to decide what type of storage policy to use (either dedicated or random). The analytics team sent you the following table of the inventory levels by product (the units are in number of pallets). The data comes from a similar facility for the first 2 quarters of 2020.
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Single-person hammock 20,000 17,500 18,570 21,030 22,300 14,000 Two-person hammock 15,000 16,500 10,000 11,200 8,000 20,000 Hammock straps 25,000 26,000 24,760 25,540 23,450 27,300 Calculate how much space would be required to store inventory using a dedicated storage policy. Calculate how much space would be required to store inventory using a random storage policy. Would a random storage policy ever require more space than a dedicated policy? Why or why not?
