The similarities among the five bases of power can be found right in the description, they all area specific type of power, "the capacity of one person A to influence the behavior of another B, sothat B acts according to the wishes of A" (Robbins & Judge, 2019, p. 437). The differences comein when you look at power as two main types or groups of power, in which the five bases aresub-groups. Reward power is "compliance achieved based on theability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable" (Robbins & Judge, 2019, p. 438).Legitimate power is "the power a person receives as a result of his or her position in the formalhierarchy of an organization" (Robbins & Judge, 2019, p. 439). The second group is personalpower which is defined by the power coming from an individual's unique characteristics. Fromthe five bases of power, expert and referent fall into the personal power category. Expert power is"influence based on special skills or knowledge" (Robbins & Judge, 2019, p. 439).
