The situation surrounding the removal of women in Saudi Arabia's version of an IKEA catalog is distasteful. I do not believe it was a good business decision by any means. Something seemingly minuscule as a woman in an advertisement became an even bigger issue of ethics and misogyny. My overall problem with the decision to remove the woman from the catalog is that Saudi Arabia is already a country that is slowly progressing in women's rights but is still oppressive to women, so taking the extra step to remove the woman from an ad displaying a family unit in order to try to appeal to Saudi Arabian society is a step backward for women's rights. There is a fine line in marketing when it comes to trying to appeal to other cultures, but in this case, it was an unnecessary approach and had nothing to do with culture. The ad did not display the woman in a position of power or driving a car, as mentioned that women are still not able to do in Saudi Arabia; she was solely pictured in a family setting. I believe they should have left the ad the way it was. The article states that their actions were a mistake, but I think Saudi Arabia IKEA made the decision with full intent. Another part of the ordeal I have an issue with is where they mentioned they removed the image of the female designer who designed the furniture line they were advertising. This is not only an issue of ethics and sexism, but also proper crediting as the designer was mentioned in all other catalogs and was removed solely from Saudi Arabia's version as well. Being a country where women are still oppressed, inclusion and representation are extremely important. I am not saying they should depict a female revolution and women taking over, which surely would not roll over well in Saudi Arabia, but showing them in everyday life and showing women can have important roles such as designers are important for the women of Saudi Arabia to see. What are your thoughts?
