The slaves of Haiti freed themselves and created independence within the French Empire. When Napoleon tried to re-implement slavery, the revolution continued until Haiti was completely free. It was interesting that even though slavery went against the ideals of the French revolution, France was not willing to sacrifice the financial benefits of having slaves in the colonies. However, if a slave made it to the French mainland, they were free.
