Ultimately, I think the reemergence of quiet quitting is both a generational change and in response to the current pandemic. Despite the increase in stressors among both health care workers and executives (Couser et al., 2021), poor workplace culture, which is largely impacted by executives, was found to contribute to the severity of psychological symptoms experienced by health care workers (Young et al., 2021). It is likely that employees sensed the negative change in workplace culture following the pandemic and have decided to step back from their duties in response. Page 10 of the textbook highlights the connection between workplace culture and potential performance of employees (Hernandez and O'Connor, 2010). Quiet quitting is a reflection of a vast workplace culture change. Extending employee hours due to staffing shortages may increase health care worker burnout. If that solution is proposed, health care workers should not have to have their weekly hours increased or their pay decreased. Employers should strategically plan by thinking ahead. Strengthening bonds with stakeholders that may have access to additional employees (like contracted specialized health service companies or medical schools) may help to increase coverage when departments are short staff.
