The text author refers to the human capital theory as one of the primary educational models of today. In essence, the theory assumes that monies and resources expended on education will foster economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve the income potential of citizens (Spring, 2018, p. 93). However, there are conflicting positions regarding economic goals of schooling. Two positions to consider are: 1. Some feel the global economy and nature of jobs are constantly changing; therefore, economic growth should not be a goal of K-12 schooling. Instead, the goal of K-12 schools should be to provide a general education to students, preparing them for employment in a variety of fields. The primary goal of schooling should be to prepare students to improve the quality of U.S. society and to help individuals achieve personal happiness. 2. Some feel the goal of K-12 schooling should be to implement instruction, curriculum, and assessment designed to improve economic growth and to educate students to compete in a global market. For the purposes of this discussion question, adopt one of the two stated stances that you feel most aligned with. Discuss why you feel the stance is most appropriate. Support your stance on if and how human capital economics should dominate school policies.
