The triplets were separated at birth and placed in 3 different homes. By chance they discovered one another in 1980 at 19 years of age, and the movie begins as a joyful human interest story. It is only as the movie progresses that they discover that they were intentionally placed in 3 homes with differing socio-economic standings, the same religion, and an adopted older sister, and the entire adoption was a staged research experiment. Their respective adoptive parents had not been informed that their sons were triplets. Research scientists visited, observed and tested the boys throughout their early lives, and the parents were told that this was a normal process for adoptions. As the story progresses, they determine that they were not the only children to be so researched; there were also several sets of twins. The researchers had no intention of ever informing their test subjects of the experiment. The goals and conclusions of the scientists were never revealed.
