1. The University of Ames has 10,000 students (52 percent women, 48 percent men). There are a total of 24 teams (15 for women and 12 for men). All 12 of the men's teams are varsity, but only 9 of the women's teams have varsity status. The others are club teams. The number of student-athletes mirrors the percentage of male and female students at the college. One of the men's teams is football. In terms of scholarships, 60 percent of scholarships go to the men's teams; 40 percent of those scholarships go to the football team.

Because of budget cuts, the school has had to cut many programs, including athletic programs.
