The U.S. Division of Agriculture (USDA) controls WIC. The program had around 344,000 members in 1975 and developed rapidly.4 WIC currently serves about a portion of the babies brought into the world in the United States.3 However, enlistment has declined as of late, both in caseloads and portion of qualified families served. Modernization is expected to make the program more open to qualified families and to make interest feasible for moms who return to work.5
