The "War on Drugs" has failed to achieve its original mandate and as defined, is an unwinnable "war." The U.S. alone has invested more than a trillion dollars in the effort, and the proportion of illicit drug consumers in the U.S. has not significantly changed (Huey, 2014). Moreover, drug cartels have become more violent, more powerful, and more firmly entrenched in their ever-expanding scope of influence. Lawmakers would be wise to realize the futility of the war's strategy. One cannot mandate morality, and as long as demand exists, legislation will only embolden organized crime in their pursuit of greater and greater profits, regardless of the cost. Believing otherwise is simply delusional. Reply
