The way I would explain it to someone is by explaining to them that when you do things in healthcare, especially working in this Emergency room that it takes a team to succeed in almost every aspect of the job, instead of working independently. Systems thinking can be applied to bring positive outcomes to the healthcare systems by improving many aspects of the system. Like by making sure safety measures are in place and that performance standards are being met. Reducing wait times in the waiting room is also a safety measure which is a big issue right now. In my hospital wait times are longer than they have been in a while. So as long as we are documenting correctly and making sure everything is done properly and in a timely manner. Those wait times can be cut down so that sick patients don't have to wait longer than usual. Systems thinking is essential for examining and improving healthcare safety and performance, but a shared understanding and application of the concept is not well developed among front-line staff, healthcare improvers, leaders, policymakers, the media and the general public(Leveson N, Dulac N, Marais K, et al..
