The weights of the paper and the apple are low in relation to the maximum weight that a worker might be able to pick up. An apple weights 150200g, less than 10% of the maximum we might expect a worker to be able to pick up. Duration of exertion is given by total repetitive motion time as a percentage of cycle time. In this case, 4 layers are packed per box at 15s per layer. Duration is therefore (10 pts) or (10pts) of cycle time. Hand/wrist posture is obtained by observation but could be supplemented with high-speed video recording to capture any extremes of wrist posture. The left-hand wrist posture is very good. It is simple pronation as the apple is grasped followed by 90 of supination (i.e., back to neutral) when the apple is tossed to the right hand. The right-hand wrist posture is very bad as it has both ulnar deviations, when the paper is flicked from the tray combined with flexion as the apple is caught. The speed of work is very fast for both hands as they both work at the same pace. This is particularly stressful since the work is remunerated on a piece rate basis. Duration per day is limited by the fact that there is no production line. The repetitive task is part of a larger piece of work. So for 8h day, only 24h are spent in high repetition activities. a) Based on the class notes, fill out the following table. (40 pts) b) Find out the SI for left and right hands. (20 pts) c) How can we redesign the packing stand to reduce the risk of injury? What would be the actual effect of this change in the procedure lifting the paper? (20 pts) a)
