The four areas includer - Organizational Chart - Organizational Design - Innovation - Change Part 1: Instructions - Organizational Chart Whenever a new enterprise is started, the owner must make decisions about how to structure the organization. For example. he or she must decide what functions are required, how those functions will be broken down into individual jobs, how those jobs will be grouped back together into logical departments, and how authorify and responsibisty will be allocated across positions. Assume that you have decided to open a handmade chocolate business in your local community. Your products wis be traditional bars and novelty. shaped chocolates, truffles, other chocolate products such as ice cream, and gift baskets and boxes featuring chocolates. You have. hired a taiented chef and believe that her expertise, coupled with your unique designs and high-qualify ingredients, will make your products very popular. You have also inherited enough money to get your buiness up and running and to cover about one year of living expenses lin other words. you do not need to pay yourself a satary. You intend to buy food items including chocolate, cocos, white chocolate, nuts, and fruit from suppliors whio deliver to your area. Your chef wit then turn these ingredients into luscious products that will then be attractively packaged. Local grocery store owners and restaurant chefs have seen samples of your groducts and indecated akeen interest in selling them You know, hewever, that vou will stall need to rervice accounts and keep your customers happy. At the pre4ent time. yeu are trying to determine how many people you need to get your business going and how to eroup them most effectively into an organezation, You realize that you can start. out quite small and then expand as sales warrant. However, you alio worry that if wou are continually adding people and rearrangink your organization, confusion and inefticiency may result. Under each of the following scenarios, decide how best to design your organization. Create a basic oreanizational chart for each of the three seenunios to thow your thoughits that include the job titles you are propoting. Your organizational chart should fit within one of the basic forms of organizationat derign. - Scenario 1. You will design and sell the products yourself, as well as oversee production. You will stirt with a workforce of five people. - Scenario 2. You intend to devote all of your time to sales to increase revenues, leaving all other functions to others. You will start with a workforce of nine peopie - Scenario 3. You do not intend to handle anyone's function yourself but will instead oversee the entire operation and will start with a workforce of 15 people. Part 2: Discussion Questions 1. How clear (or how ambiguous) were the decisions about organization design? 2. What are your thoughts about starting out too large to maintain stability, as opposed to starting small and then growing? 3. What basic tactors did you consider in choosing a design? Part 3: Instructions - Innovation Consider the following list. Categorize each scenario into each of the three dimensions of innovation that apply. For each scenario, you will state if it is ndical of incremental innovation, technical or managerial innovation, and then product or process innovation (if applicable). Explain your answers. Example: New version of the iPhone - This would be an example of incrementalinnovation since there are minor changes in the iPhone versus previous versions. it would also be a technical innovation since the physical appearance or performance of the product changes. As a technical innovation, it could dassify as eithera product or process innovation or both depending on the specific changes that were made with the new version as well as the manufacturing process. - Teaching college courses by digitally recording the instructor and then making the digital fike avalable online - The rise in popularity of virtual organizations (discussed in Chapter 6) - Checking the security of packages on airlines with the type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning devices that are common in healch care - Robotic arms that can perform surgery that is too precise for a human surgcon's hands - Hybrid automobiles, which run on both batteries and gasoline - Using video games to teach soldiers how to plan and execute barties Part 4: Instructions - Change Assume that you ace the manager of an organization that has a routine way of performing a task and now faces a major change in how it performis that tiakk.
