There are many populations that are vulnerable. As therapist we will work with a variety of vulnerable populations. Miller (2016) explained that the most important aspect of safeguarding autonomy is by developing a strong relationship with the client. This is done by creating an environment of respect and trust (Slay-Westbrook, 2017). Lewis (2021) explained that treating the client as the expert of theilife, encourages them to become their own agent. Rogers believed that creating a therapeutic relationship on equal ground was important in establishing autonomy (Raskin et al., 2019).

Following that the psychologist should educate the client about the existing boundaries of the therapeutic relationship and the client should be encouraged to make decisions on their terms. This goes along with Rogerian theory where the client has the agency to make decisions about themselves and their therapy (Raskin et al., 2019). Lewis (2021) explained that the therapist should do everything they can to protect the client's autonomy and when there are ethical reasons to breach confidentiality or overstep the client'sautonomy, the therapist should ways in which to keep the client's autonomy intact.

What are situations where client autonomy should be overstepped? How would a therapist rebuild the clients autonomy?
