There are many theories about the cause of antisocial personality disorder. It is marked by a long term pattern of irresponsible, impulsive, unscrupulous and sometimes criminal behavior beginning in childhood or early adolescence (Hare, Neumann, & Widiger, 2012; Moreira et al., 2014). Persistent violent offenders, many with personality disorders are found in less than 5% of the male population, however they commit over 50% of violent crimes (Hodgins, 2007: Reidy et al., 2015) They show no remorse or guilt. Theories for the development of antisocial personality range from abnormal brain development, genetic predisposition, and impaired neurological function on the biological end of the spectrum to the sociocultural end of the spectrum which includes broken homes, lack of attachment, poor parenting, poverty and conflict filled childhoods. Research by Cathy Wisdom (1989) clarified the role of childhood abuse as a cause of antisocial personality disorder in a small percentage of people. Which theories do you find to have the most merit? Biological or sociocultural?
