There is a small furniture company based out of Taunton, Massachusetts that I have been following for a few years now called Wyrmwood that I think has recently demonstrated a few ideas we've recently discussed in this course. They have become recently notable for recently raising $8.4 million dollars for a new line of furniture (link). This furniture will be partially constructed by a furniture company based out of Pennsylvania called Keystone that has been struggling. One of the interesting aspects is that Wyrmwood's marketing department creates weekly videos that are intended to provide an 'authentic' view of the company and its decisions. I've curated few of these videos below with enough context that I hope you can drop in to see some of the interesting decisions these companies have made. Note that some of the videos contain expletives. Background The first 4-5 minutes of this video discusses some of the problems that both Wyrmwood and Keystone have had with their capacity and business models with some discussions of why a partnership could be useful: https://youtu.be/VuaYLibY2Ic?t=118 In this video, Doug (the CEO of Wyrmwood) discusses some of the reasons that he wants to purchase Keystone with the company's accountant: https://youtu.belZ7vOT6SpCM8? t=324 Watch until at least 10:30 Launch of the Kickstarter (August 11, 2020) Modular Gaming table Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wyrmwood/modular-gaming-table/description The first 5-6 minutes of this video shows the live reactions as the Kickstarter is launched as well as a promotional video for the product: https://youtu.be/YQzU5paJ7Ac Aftermath of the Kickstarter After the initial success of the Kickstarter, Doug starts falling into what appears to be Scope Creep related to the number of options customers of the Kickstarter will have. The Kickstarter, as originally envisioned would offer 21 types of tables (varying in size, height, and type of wood). When launched, it increased to 70: https://youtu.be/Cg8XEFn6spc? t=326 Watch until about 10 minutes. After the success of the Kickstarter, the company buys new equipment to try and increase their fulfillment rate: https://youtu.be/s-_izokiLlo?t=478 Felt Gate: An outside supplier provided felt (which goes on the playing surface of the table) that wasn't the right size. Wyrmwood debates multiple options for dealing with this issue. Problem explained and level (https://youtu.be/OPJRIDIFQ14?t=410). Problem addressed with collaboration of original supplier (just the first minute of: https://youtu.be/-JqoGAlqbNO). the issue discussed: (watch 2 minutes: https://youtu.be/AspkU8jh3Cc?t=60) They investigate an alternative supplier that is more expensive After delays due to late materials and equipment delivery, as well as a recalculation of fulfillment, Wyrmwood decides to no longer make or sell the furniture Keystone had been offering in order to speed up the delivery of the Kickstarter tables. You could think companies work, even if it no longer makes financial sense: https://youtu.be/OBHuu6OG4Ng?t=18 f this as reducing the scope of Keystone, but as you can see, there are often emotional ties to a What do you think of this company's decisions and project management thus far?
