There was considerable criticism levied against all levels of government in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In particular, many observers viewed the governmental response as both slow and inefficient due to a lack of communication and coordination among local, state, and federal agencies. However, a notable example of success in this arena was the U.S. Coast Guard, which was heavily involved in search and rescue efforts. Using the Coast Guard as an example, some observers called for a larger role for the U.S. military in domestic disaster response operations.
