summarize: in at least one paragraph, summarize the piece's main ideas. Determine the main ideas of the piece. Plan a way to state them in your own words (quotes are OK, but should be used sparingly.) Make sure to condense information. You will have to synthesize the information down to only its most essential content. Leave out minor details or examples that are not needed to understand the main points. In this part of the short essay, you are simply stating what the selection you chose is about.

Comment: explain what you thought about the piece you chose in at least one paragraph. To help guide your commentary, I offer you the following questions to consider: What did you learn from reading this piece? What surprised you or moved you about this piece (moved you meaning, made you excited, or happy, or angry, concerned, worried, etc.)? What impacts does this piece have on current social life including laws and policies? What more do you want to know after you finished reading, so what questions did this leave you with?
