Think about one aspect of your personal identity or an experience you had that was connected to some part of your identity. Make a metaphor or simile to express it and then explain what you are trying to articulate.
Example:
I'm adopted, and that fact has an impact on my sense of self. I crafted the following simile to try to express part of this aspect of my identity:
Being adopted is like being a piece of pottery, with its clay bearing the imprints of an unknown maker.
I wanted to express how my physical self carries traits of my biological parents and relatives yet I don't know who actually gave me those traits. It's not a completely successful simile for a couple of reasons. It refers to a single maker rather than two birth parents and various ancestors. A potter also intentionally adds characteristics to the pottery.
