Think back about morality, ethics and integrity. How do feel that these three ideas play into operating a business? Is it an acceptable business practice to do 'whatever is necessary' to keep a business afloat regardless of the ethical considerations? Why or why not?
Consider the real case scenario - The company Lockheed was in a struggle for survival in the 1970's because their commercial aircraft were not selling well. To obtain a large order from All Nippon Airways in Japan, the company had to bribe members of the Japanese government. Paying the bribes, and getting the order for the new aircraft did NOT put money in the pockets of the Lockheed executives, but it saved thousands of jobs at Lockheed. When the bribes became known, the Lockheed executives were ousted.
Now, forgetting that bribes are ILLEGAL under U.S. law (but as an attorney I am remiss to ever forget this!), was the bribe ethical because it saved so many jobs? Why or why not?
