This assignment asks you to examine a recent news story dealing with the Canadian Criminal Justice system, the media's role, societal issues and the role of legal/policy systems in Canada. You will be expected to apply some of the criminological theories, concepts and themes we have learned about the Canadian Criminal Justice system and criminology so far, to your particular article.

For this, you will choose a newspaper article that discusses the Canadian Criminal Justice system andthe community, that interests you.

Then you will write a short critical/analytic essay about the case/story/issue(s), society's response, and the challenges of dealing with this crime in our community.

The essay will draw links between the article, course materials and some of the theories and concepts we have learned about crime and criminology in the course.

As a minimum, the essay must draw on at least four (4) theories, concepts and/or themes covered in the course to provide context for and discussion of the Canadian Criminal Justice system.

Required length: 5-6 pages (not including the title page and bibliography).

Style: Papers must be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt font, with 1-inch margins, saved in Word. The essay must use the APA citation and referencing format and cite the course textbook.

Criteria for Essay Grading: Below is a breakdown of the criteria for the project.

Your essay will be graded using the following criteria:

1) Assessing the quality of your analysis/argument (this includes your comprehension, interpretation and critical analysis of the course materials);

2) The structure of your essay (how well you develop a clear, coherent line of argument); originality and creativity. Your paper must be structured as an essay with an Introduction, Body and Conclusion;

3) Integration of course materials (this includes direct references to and citation of course readings); and how well you follow instructions.

4) Problems with organization, logic and clarity, as well as errors in grammar, spelling and syntax will figure significantly in the grading process, so thoroughly review and edit your essay prior to submitting.

The Essay (35%) is approximately 5-6 double-spaced pages, and is to have four components:

1) TITLE PAGE, INTRODUCTION AND THESIS STATEMENT: Provide a title page, introduction providing the reader with an overview of your paper topic and a theoretically grounded thesis or argument on the substantive issue. /5

2) THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK, CONCEPTS OR THEMES: Provide information on what theoretical perspective(s) concepts or themes from the course you plan to utilize in your paper. Why is this information most suitable for your argument? Draw from the theories, concepts and themes discussed in the course textbook. /5

3) CRITICAL DISCUSSION/CRITIQUE: Provide a skeptical, challenging, and critical (using your own words) scholarly discussion on the relevance of this evidence (your newspaper topic) to the ongoing development of the Canadian Criminal Justice system, the media's role, societal issues and the role of legal/policy systems in Canada making connections to course material utilizing theoretical perspectives, concepts and themes. At a minimum, the essay must draw on at least four (4) theories, concepts and/or themes covered in the course to provide context for and discussion of the the Canadian Criminal Justice system. Cite course content at least 5 times and incorporate direct quotes from the course textbook in your analysis./20

4) CONCLUSION & REFERENCES: A summary of your research findings and conclusions. Discuss your findings and provide recommendations for policy development and social justice initiatives in your community. Include a Reference list of your sources. /5
