This assignment focuses on estimating the amount of one chemical, xylene, released from one operation in a facility for purposes of annual TRI reporting. Xylene is used as the solvent component in the carrier fluid of a paint used for spray application in a coating operation at the facility.
NOTE: In the real world, there may be several different uses of xylene in a facility that need to be included in the TRI report and there may be other components of the coating that are required to be reported pursuant to the TRI reporting requirements.
Based on purchasing and operations records, the facility used 27,980 gallons of coating in the operation during the reporting year. Based on operations records, 1,430 gallons of coating ended up as waste (it was not used in the spray booth but was shipped off-site for disposal).
NOTE: It is critical to keep documentation supporting the annual usage of the materials associated with the emissions. For TRI reporting, waste is an emission.
The coating contains 45% xylene by weight and the density of the coating is 10.5 lbs/gallon.
Assume that all the xylene in the coating used in the spray booth is either removed by the booth exhaust fan or it becomes fugitive emissions from the booth into the facility. Xylene is only a carrier so it is not deposited on the parts being coated. The spray booth exhaust goes to an air pollution control incineration device which has a removal efficiency of 99% for VOC control (xylene is a VOC).
