This assignment will help you and your team apply your leadership learning to a simulated real life (movie) situation. You will choose a movie to watch and analyze the leaders ability to lead organizationally. This will allow you to develop your understanding of various skills and behaviours as we discussed throughout the term. You will look at how effective your leaders style is in the given situation. You will then identify key lessons you learned from your movie leader and how you could apply those in a business situation. The focus should be on the following key questions derived from the learning objectives, and you can integrate concepts from other parts of the course as you see necessary:
How does the leader(s) create and maintain a vision for the work they are facing in the film?
How have they created and sustained a culture within their team, organization or environment in which they are working? How is this demonstrated in the film?
How has/ have the leader(s) encouraged change within the context of their work? At what level if the change implemented individual, group or organization (societal)?
Instructions
Choose a movie you will find in the Groups section of our virtual class. The Groups will be self selected based on your interest in which movie.
Select a role/character (does not have to be the lead character) that demonstrates leadership qualities.
Every group will have a different movie.
Kick-off
Create a team contract if you feel this will support your team functioning.
Determine how each of the group members is going to find a source for the movie (DVD, Netflix, library, etc).
Decide on a deadline when all of the team members have to have watched the movie.
Decide on an approach for the case analysis.
Presentation/Discussion
Your presentation will be a 20 minute digital presentation. The following outline should help with the content you need to prepare:
1. Introduction/Timeline
Provide a short summary of the movie and the role of the leader(s). This synopsis should include relevant information that assists the reader in fully understanding the role of the leader within the context of the movie including their motivation. Help the audience understand the context of the movie. In a series of either bullet points, or other presentation graphics you may use, outline the key events in the movie that have a direct impact on the leader(s) and their ability to lead effectively.
2. Describe the Leader(s)- Leadership Qualities/Style
Describe the actions that illustrate specific leadership characteristics and behaviours. Identify the leadership theory or theories that you see demonstrated by your movie leader. Include specific examples of how their behavior demonstrates a particular leadership trait, behavior or theory that we have studied this term. For example how do they motivate, and how would you link that to the theories of motivation weve examined? How do they manage a team, what stage of team building do you think they are at and why? How do they act in an emotionally charged situation? How would you relate that to EQ? How do they manage power? Relate that to the types of power we have studied. (These are just examples of behaviours you could be looking at). These could be negative leadership qualities as well.
You must include three specific examples of theories, traits, behaviours or characteristics that demonstrate a particular leadership quality.
3. Leadership Effectiveness at an Organizational Level
Using concepts from the readings and from class discussion, describe how effective (or ineffective) the leader is. Support your conclusions!
How does the leader(s) create and maintain a vision for the work/challenge they are facing in the film?
How have they created and sustained a culture within their team, organization or environment in which they are working? How is this demonstrated in the film?
How has/ve the leader(s) encouraged change within the context of their work? At what level if the change implemented individual, group or organization (societal)?
4. Lessons for Business
Describe how the leadership lessons in the movie can be translated and applied to the business world. Find three examples and fully describe how you would use these in a real business situation. Relate each of these lessons back to a specific theory we have studied and discussed.
What does the film help us learn or better understand about leadership?
5. Conclusion
Briefly summarize your presentation and draw any conclusions based on what you have discovered in the analysis of your movie.
Format
1. Your presentation should be maximum 20 minutes long.
2. Students must provide feedback for all presentations to earn their full marks. Marks will be deducted on a prorated basis for each presentation skipped.
