From the perspective of a researcher, the vision comes through an examination of knowledge with a critical eye. Furthermore, a company cannot develop a strategic vision without a clear understanding of the business environment. However, a business also engages in a social contract with its customers, employees, stakeholders, and with the public. It is in fulfilling that contract that the company's vision and mission become important. The role of research cannot be separated from the fulfillment of the social contract as the company fulfills its mission.
