This document is an authorized copy for the personal use of Mr./Mrs. Mariana Almeida, 2021-04-06 UBIESE Business School University of Navarra Arlanzones National Park Eduard Calvo P-1167-E April 2018 Arlanzones National Park is a very beautiful natural reserve that attracts a large number of visitors, especially in high season - from February to May. Water is high during these months, making it the best time to observe wildlife in the park. The park offers diverse points of interest (see Exhibit 1): natural beauty, such as that found in the White Grotto, competes with the possibility of rafting down the El Lento Rapids or visiting natural reserves, such as the Madera Woods or the Bird Sanctuary. Such variety attracts visitors of very different profiles, from sports enthusiasts to groups of retirees, ornithologists, and school field trips. The park management is concerned about the impact that the growing number of visitors might have on the location's flora and fauna. To address this issue, they canceled individual entries to the park and created group packages that offer timed visits to preestablished areas in a specific order. Additionally, they expect these new packages to lead to higher levels of satisfaction among visitors who, in the past, were sometimes unsure about what to see in the park. Packages are based on one-day routes that begin and end at the park hotel and are aimed at different types of visitors. Exhibit 2 presents a list of the routes available, the amount of time spent at each location, and their path code. Although groups may vary in size, the time spent at each location does not. Groups are accompanied by a guide who attends to all the visitors and keeps track of the amount of time spent at each location in order to complete the planned route in one day. Groups have lunch (packed in picnic bags) at one of the stops along the route. Transport time depends on the distance between locations (see Exhibit 3) and the chosen means of transportation. Groups can tour the park either on foot (4 km/h) or in off-road vehicles (10 km/h). Unless otherwise noted, off-road vehicles are used for round-trip routes between O and E, and O and A. To protect the environment, there is a limit on the number of groups that can be in the same location at the same time. Therefore, a minimum distance must be maintained between groups. The maximum number of groups that can be in each location simultaneously is as follows: A (on the lake), 3; B, 4; C, 2; D, 2; E, 10; F, 2; G, 5; H, 2; 1, 5. Don't worry about daily variation and assume that the park operates 24 hours per day. a) Identify items, activities and resources. b) For each package type: How many groups could the park process per day if they only sold this type of package? What is the bottleneck for each type of package? Are the packages well designed? If the sales mix is 50% sporting packages and 50% full packages: How many groups can the park process per day?
