This family consists of a single mother (Elizabeth), and three children aged 6, 4 and 2. The eldest child (Arnold) has a physical disability and congenital illness requiring regular trips to doctors for assessment and treatment. Elizabeth is regular visitor to the neighborhood centre you work at.

Elizabeth suffers from depression and lacks confidence, with a very low self-esteem. She is still grieving from her own mother who died 1 year ago.

The family is extremely isolated, with no family support. The children's father is not in contact. There is limited phone contact with Elizabeth's father (not living in area) and no communication with her 3 siblings (also not in this area). She would like to re-establish regular contact with her family but would find this communication difficult due to previous issues.

The eldest child (Arnold) is at school and middle child (Sue) at pre-school. They have no car so Elizabeth is reliant on other parents, bus and/or taxi for transport, so the family is generally at home.

Elizabeth finds it difficult to discuss issues relating to her eldest child with doctors and teachers. Her focus and concern is understandably on the higher needs child.

You are linked to the family through your organization. Through commitment to regular visiting, and practical support you establish a strong and open relationship with Elizabeth. You have become an important "other adult" in the lives of the children, helping focus on needs of each individual.
