This global movement occurred at where protesters and organizers attempted to stop the building of the $1,200$ mile oil pipeline $-$ the Dakota Access Pipeline $($DAPL$).$ The pipeline would cut through historical treat lands, sacred sites, and cross the Missouri River.

Despite clear, overwhelming objections to this project, the construction of the pipeline began in $2016.$ What was unique about DAPL protests was that tribal members from across the world physically joined the protests and demonstrations. They were called Water Protectors and hundreds showed up$,$ despite severe militarized repression of non$-$violent protestors by law enforcement and private security forces.

Pipeline construction was halted under the Obama administration because of public pressure, but resumed and completed under the Trump administration. It leaked $84$ gallons of oil in April, $2022.$ This tribe is still fighting in the courts to shut down DAPL. The Biden administration has done nothing to help shut down DAPL.
