This is a graded discussion: 20 points possible due Monday APR 3 Module 3: Discussion Since this is a group discussion, each group has its own conversation for this topic. Here are the ones you have access to: Our class discussion boards for each module are meant to facilitate interaction in the course. Your original post is due by 11:59pm on the due date specified on the Course Schedule (Monday, APR 3), with the responses due Thursday, APR 6. Be sure to subscribe to your own thread, so that you can be notified when your classmates respond to you. Discussion Prompt: Gender, Sex, and Babies at Stores The goal of this assignment is to encourage you to think about the ways that gender*sex is defined through symbols -- clothing decorations, slogans, colors, and styles. The other goal is to have you apply your understanding of the concepts of gender and sex to clothing items. There are many ways that our world is 'gendered' and/or 'sexed' that we have grown so used to that we barely notice it anymore; this assignment asks you to notice how the world of baby clothes is gendered and sexed at a very early stage of child development. This discussion board post does not require you to adhere to a word limit; instead, please address the three questions below. For this assignment, "baby" is defined as between 0 and 18 months of age. You will need to take your time to look at the clothing marketed to (parents/guardians/relative/friends of) babies 0-18 months of age. Be sure to take notes while you're "shopping" so that you can address the points listed below. Please pay careful attention to the number of examples required for each question. This discussion prompt requires you to go online and look at clothes and food for babies/infants 0-12 months of age; amazon, target, walmart, old navy, are all appropriate choices. 1. What colors are sold as "baby girl" clothes (2 examples) and what colors are sold as "baby boy" clothes (2 examples)? Does the clothing exhibit gender*sex differences. Explain/justify your answer to this question. 2. What kinds of decorations/designs/words do the girls' clothes exhibit (2 examples)? Boys' clothes (2 examples)? Do these decorations exhibit gender *sex differences? Explain/justify your answer. 3. What kinds of colors and decorations/designs/words are sold as "gender neutral" or "unisex"? Provide 2 examples of gender neutral/uni sex colors and 2 examples of gender neutral//uni sex decorations. (old navy has uni sex and gender neutral clothing; other stores may too but you may need to use the phrase 'uni-sex' or 'gender neutral' when searching.) You cannot use the clothing examples provided in this assignment.
