This is a mass diffusion problem At 1:00am you receive a phone call from the Chief of Police. Although in a dazed, sleepy state, the tension in the chiefs voice quickly brings you to your senses and you are horrified to learn that Snow White has been murdered with a deadly poison. You arrive at the crime scene by 2:00am and find that police have just removed a poisoned, peeled apple from a creek. Evidently, when Snow fell to the ground after taking a small bite, the apple rolled into the creek where it remained submerged under a branch such that water flowed rapidly all around the nearly spherical 3-in-diameter apple. Using the gas chromatograph you always have in your car, you analyze a very small chunk of the apple mid-way between the center and the surface. This analysis reveals a concentration of 0.00419M of a highly-toxic, water-soluble chemical. Later the coroner finds that Snows bite was 1.5 cm3 of apple and she ingested 7.5x10-5 moles of poison. determine how much poison ended up in the stream to report this to the local citizens who are very environmentally conscience. (Assume Dpoison, apple = 5.0 x 10-6 cm2 /s for the poison in the apple). Hint: You may assume that the poison is very water soluble and thus the convection coefficient, hm, is very, very large. That very very large hm results in such a very small concentration of poison on the outside of the apple that we can consider it negligible. Try using the approximate solution first and after you solve it see if the Fo>0.2. If so you can use the approximate solution. To determine the total amount of poison that ended up in the stream think about how you can determine how much of the poison was in the apple originally and how much poison is left in the apple now. Think about how you might be able to integrate the concentration equation over r to get the total concentration in the apple or you can use the equation given to you in the text and instead use it for mass instead of heat. You can neglect the 1.5 cm3 bitten out of the apple and treat the apple as a sphere.
