This section discusses some of the ways in which triangles are determined to be congruent (), which means that they have the same size and shape. This is different from triangles being similar (~), which means that they have the same shape but have different sizes. It introduces us to three theorems that allow us to make this determination. The first theorem is SSS - (Side-Side-Side) which states that when three sides of one triangle are congruent to the corresponding three sides of another triangle, the two triangles are congruent. The second theorem is SAS (Side-Angle-Side), which states that if two pairs of sides of two triangles are equal in length, and the included angles are equal in measurement, then the triangles are congruent. The third theorem is Hypotenuse Leg (HL), if the hypotenuse (the side of a triangle opposite the right angle) and one leg of a right triangle are congruent to the hypotenuse and one leg of another right triangle, then the triangles are congruent.
