ADVISER NOTES

We had a discussion around risk tolerance but did not complete a risk profile questionnaire.

Juergen was happy to invest in growth assets but did not want to invest for too long - he will be suited to high growth.

Ulla was more conservative and did not like shares - I believe she is better as growth because they are both young.

Both Ulla's parents have diabetes and her mother has hypertension as well. They are in their sixties but were diagnosed in their fifties.

Meeting Notes 1 - Introductory meeting Background

The clients were referred to me by Rocco, a lawyer, and we have agreed to a revenue split if the client's go ahead with the advice. To date, I am reasonably well versed with super advice, have some knowledge of insurance advice, and do not know much about self-managed super funds advice and margin lending.

Juergen and Ulla Sanchez

The couple contacted the practice because they were referred by their solicitor. Juergen is self employed butcher, earning approximately $120k and Ulla feels that they really need some good financial advice as they have debts and little idea of how they are going to fund their retirement and what options they have with their superannuation funds. The increasing interest rates and cost of living pressure is worrying her as their fixed rate mortgage comes off in April and converts to variable rate.

The couple are aged in their late 30's and they have 2 children - Darwin aged 10 and Alexis aged 8 who are in primary school.

The couple have previously sought financial advice before but their adviser left the industry as he could not pass the FA exam after four attempts and were a little nervous. I would recommend predominatly investments with a low risk profile because of this.

I questioned their goals and objectives, getting Ulla to think about what their future retirement might look like and if they forsee any changes in their situation.

Juergen received an inheritance from his mum for around $200K but they haven't done anything with it so its sitting in a Term deposit. They're not sure what to do with the funds, other than spending $30,000 travelling overseas, mainly to the UK and watch a few games of Juergen's favourite soccer team.

Ulla works on a casual basis at a couple of caf's as a Barrista earning $30,000 p.a.

They have listed their assets and liabilities as follows:

Home Value $1.0M Contents - $100K Car - $60K (2 cars) Super accounts

  • Juergen: $200,000 with CBUS super fund

-Ulla: $40,000 with HESTA industry super fund

-Ulla: $20,000 with Australian Super Fund Cash - $10,000 (ING)

Term deposit - $200,000 (ING)

Mortgage outstanding on their home - $650,000 with NAB Car Loan - $30k

Goals and objectives -

Ulla felt they should be more conscious of their cashflow spending to better understand their future affordability. Juergen was rather quiet and did not say much, nodding along as we discussed. I focussed more on Ulla. In summary this is what we discussed:

  • To determine whether their super accounts are producing good returns or whether they should move
  • Inheritance Lump sum - discuss with Juergen options for the inheritance
  • Have enough money for an annual international holiday
  • Allow some reserves for quick access - dollar amount to be confirmed after she speaks to Juergen privately.

I felt that the above goals were too much and did not want to confuse them further by talking about other goals and objectives.

Ulla mentioned that their accountant suggested that they invest in property and should consider setting up a Self-managed Super Fund. I told them that it is a great idea, but I will come back to them.

Advised I would contact the clients after 5 weeks to see if they wish to proceed with me putting together a comprehensive Statement of Advice for them.

Follow up Meeting 2 Notes : Juergen and Ulla Sanchez

The couple have agreed to progress to the preparation of a SOA.

Juergen and Ulla attended meeting. Juergen made it known that he relies heavily on Ulla regarding finances.

Focus was to follow up on action items from last meeting and discussing their future goals with both in the room.

Juergen was not happy with how his super account was going and thought he should be getting much higher returns. He thinks they should get insurance, but Ulla said it's a waste of money. I did not pursue it further. Ulla would like advice on reviewing their spending and look at what can be done regarding cash from the inheritance which is currently sitting in a term deposit.

Ulla admits she has taken little interest in her super fund but is not keen to take any risk. She seems to have a conservative risk profile. She thinks her super fund fees are high relative to Juergen's super fund and asked why that would be the case. She seems cost conscious.

We briefly spoke about risk and return, and the couple seemed happy with my assessment of their risk profiles. I think they are both growth investors.

Ulla wishes to retain $10K cash as emergency funds.

No large capital expenditure required apart from annual international holidays (costs of around $30,000 p.a.).

Currently Juergen's super account that he presented shows that he is invested in a balanced investment option with 61% growth currently. I discussed the option of rebalancing to a growth allocation in line with our discussions and Juergen agreed with that.

Ulla's super account is also invested in a balanced investment option. She advised that she thinks a more conservative investment option might be better because she doesn't like risk. However, after some discussions, I told her that aggressive will be better and she agreed to stick with a growth option.

We spoke about investment of the inheritance and that I would recommend an investment across a range of asset classes - International, Australian shares, Fixed interest, Cash and Alternatives via a wrap account. I explained a wrap account to the couple, but they had trouble understanding how it works. I advised them not to worry because I would provide them with the PDS which they could read and gain a better understanding.

They said that their friends made lots of money from investing in crypto currency, and they want to invest in cryptocurrency as they think now is a good time. My licensee does not have any on the APL, but I referred them to an online provider. I referred them to a property developer for an off the plan property. The developer promised a 2% referral fee which I will share with the Sanchez's. I won't tell Franco the lawyer.

I mentioned to them that if they set up a SMSF, they can do property syndicate investing.

Juergen mentioned to me that he wants me to call him after the meeting to discuss something's (He did not want Ulla to know about this) I said fine. I called him and mentioned that he has a lady friend and he wants to give her some money from his inheritance. I said I will find a way.

File Note 3 - Phone Call Juergen and Ulla Sanchez

Spoke to Juergen and Ulla and reconfirm items to commence the financial plan.

Product comparison - We explained to Ulla that we completed a product comparison and the outcome showed that ABC Super fund whilst $500 p.a. more expensive than her current fund, generates higher returns. Ulla didn't seem overly convinced but did agree to proceed. I also said our research indicates that Juergen can generate significantly higher returns if he moves to the XYZ Super fund. Juergen said he was happy to consider this.

Term deposit - Confirmed amount of $200,000. Confirmed maturing on 9/4/2024 with interest rate 4.60% with ING Bank. After puttng money aside for the overseas holiday and the cosmetic surgery, Ulla was happy to consider investing the funds in the Frodo Baglin Wrap account.

I mentioned that a Self Managed Super Fund could be appropriate if they want to invest in property. Many of the clients I know have made good returns with SMSF.

I told them margin lending is something they should consider as they can grow their wealth much faster. Re confirmed goals:

  • Ulla would like to retain the inheritance under her name and invest appropriately after paying for their holiday.
  • Retain $10,000 in emergency funds
  • To amend their super fund holdings in line with their risk profiles
  • Would like their super benefit to go to each other upon death.
  • Have funds put aside for their holidays.

Important:An Insurance Needs Analysis has been scoped out. Please ensure the following warning is included in the Scope of Advice section of the SOA:

As you have elected for us not to undertake a full insurance needs analysis, we are unable to determine if the levels of cover you wish to apply for are appropriate for your needs.

Please be aware that this may result in you holding levels of cover that are insufficient to meet upfront and ongoing liabilities resulting from an unforeseen insurable event. Please contact us should you wish to have your insurance needs assessed.

Strategy Recommendations

  • Adviser to explicitly outline the recommendations to be made to the client ("consider" or "investigate" is not a recommendation).
  • Briefly outline what you as the adviser are recommending, how the recommendation is to be actioned, why you are making the recommendation, and when the recommendation is to be implemented.

Please summarise the steps in the recommended strategy indicating any chronological order that may be applicable:

Superannuation Strategies recommendation Ulla, we recommend that you;

Super account:

  • rollover all super funds into a new ABC Super account.
  • invest into the Aggressive Investment option
  • establish a binding death benefit nomination

Juergen, we recommend that you;

Super account:

  • Rollover all super funds into a new XYZ Super account.
  • invest into the aggressive Investment option
  • establish a binding death benefit nomination

Personal Insurance:

  • To get $1M Life Cover for both
  • To get $1M TPD Cover for both

Term deposit:

  • Leave $50,000 in term deposit to cover overseas holiday
  • Set up a new investment wrap account with Frodo Baglin Wrap Service for

$150,000 into the moderately aggressive Investment option

Joint

Cash at bank

  • Leave $10,000 emergency fund in back account and investment excess into a 3 month rolling term deposit with CBA at an interest rate of 4.5% p.a.

ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES CONSIDERED

Briefly detail any alternative strategies you have considered that you wish to mention in the SOA.

  • We have considered leaving both super accounts in existing funds but this was not considered because higher returns could be earned for much the same asset allocations.
  • We considered looking to invest Juergen's inheritance across clients existing super funds (concessional and non-concessional) but clients advised they did not want to invest further funds into their super accounts

FUTURE STRATEGIES CONSIDERATION

- Juergen and Ulla - as you are both under 65 year of age, you are eligible to make additional concessional and non-concessional contributions to your super account and gain valuable tax concessions. A salary sacrifice arrangement could be established for you both. Part of the annual cash surplus could also be invested into super.

Product Recommendations

Please detail platform and investment recommendations

Juergen to rollover super to new XYZ Super account.

  • Rebalance in line with Aggressive Growth Risk Profile.
  • See Wealth Solver

Juergen to establish a new investment wrap account with Frodo Baglin Wrap Service

  • Invest in line with Aggressive Growth Risk Profile. Ulla to rollover super to new ABC Super account
  • Rebalance in line with Aggressive Growth Risk Profile.
  • See Wealth Solver

To establish a new term deposit under joint names with CBA bank

  • Invest for a rolling 3 month term at a current return of 4.5% p.a.
