This week our readings focused on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
One area of the health care sector where CSR is considered highly contentious is in the world of pharmaceuticals. "Big Pharma" is often used as the poster child for corporate greed and sacrificing human health in favor of potential profits. Recently several pharmacompanies have announced major shifts towards increased CSR. This is seen by some as a positive change, while others suggest they are simply 'virtue-signalling' and trying to capitalize on improving their corporate image to make it easier for them to go about their business.
From a shareholder point of view, do you think pharmaceutical companies should focus some of their efforts on social responsibility projects? Keep in mind that I am not really asking for your personal feelings here - I am asking you to provide an answer based on available literature on what is best for the pharmacompany to ensure maximal long term economic profit. You are required to provide academicevidence to support your post.
