Your boss asked you to meet with a computer company representative and place an order for 30 PCs and 15 laser printers for the office. At the meeting, you mention it would be nice to have a printer like the ones you are ordering for your home to the sales representative. The representative tells you that because you placed such a large order, she can give you a 50% discount for the printer for your home. You realize it would be great for your entire family to have a new printer to complete projects and other tasks such as printing pictures, cards, etc. Also, Christmas is right around the corner, and it would be a great gift for all, and you would pay for the discounted printer with your own funds, not the company's. On the other hand, you feel like this might not be right or ethical but are not sure of where you stand on this point. What would you do?

Work through the 9-step problem-solving method to eventually come to your conclusion.

   2. Ethical problem(s) and your ethical dilemma(s)
      1. Define the ethical issues/problems in this case
      2. Define your ethical dilemma (include your values in conflict)
   3. Identify the stakeholders
   4. Identify possible courses of action to resolve the dilemma.
   5. Identify consequences associated with each contemplated action. (steps 3, 4, and 5 utilize utilitarian approach-include your solution using utilitarian approach)
   6. Identify duties and obligations. (deontological approach-include your solution using deontological approach)
   7. Consider your integrity. (Virtue ethics approach-include your solution using virtue ethics approach)
   8. Think creatively about other possible solutions.
   9. Check your gut and determine your final solution.

The 9 Step Ethical Problem-Solving Method 1. Get the Facts. Make sure you list all the relevant facts in a case. Do not jump straight to the solutions. Write down all facts in an unbiased manner. 2. Define the Ethical Issues. Then determine the ethical dilemma for you. What is in conflict for you? Is right & wrong in play? What is your gut telling you about this situation? Determine the values in conflict for you in the situation. 3. Identify the Stakeholders. Identify all parties who will be affected by or can affect your actions. 4. Identify possible courses of action to resolve this dilemma. What actions are you contemplating to resolve your dilemma? List them here. Action 1: Action 2: and so forth. These actions can now be put to the test of each of the three following prescriptive reasoning tools. Each tool, when applied as intended, should "tell" you which action to take to resolve your dilemma. 5. Identify consequences (both positive & negative) associated with each action contemplated to resolve your dilemma. Choose the action that creates the greatest net good for the greatest number. Use charts or T accounts if this helps you outline the benefits and costs of each action. Think about how each action addresses an interest of each stakeholder. The action that produces the greatest good for the greatest number wins this test. 6. Identify Duties/Obligations. What duty do you owe each stakeholder? How does an action contemplated to resolve your dilemma address this particular stakeholder's interest (not position) in the dilemma? The action that best meets the duties & obligations felt by you wins this test. 7. Consider Your Integrity. What does your community (be specific about who this is) tell you to do? Think of someone you respect; what would they have you do? Most importantly, identify and name the virtues that are most important to you in making a decision in this situation. Find a fix to resolve your dilemma which aligns with your virtues. S. Think Creatively About Solutions. What result do you really want to create? What is it that you really wish to accomplish? Are the actions you are contemplating to resolve your dilemma (the fix) capable of creating the result(s) you desire? Have you considered all stakeholder interests and not just their positions? Can you find an action that satisfies both your and others' interests (that is, mutual interests)? You can be creative about the way in which you seek a solution as well as the solution itself. 9. Check Your Gut. Determine your final decision. What is your gut telling you about this dilemma? After analyzing all different solutions, what is the best one that you can support
