She cites the goal of education as one involving students being allowed to or maybe taught to think for themselves. Is that always true? Or just sometimes true? And for whom? All students? Or only some? Or is it a mistake to think of the goal of education in terms of its effect on individual students? If not that, what? Option #2 Liberal vs. Technical Education Following Knox, whatever the importance and the merits of technical studies the physical sciences for instance and math, and business management, and engineering etc. the humanities occupy a special niche. Supposedly, they are transcendently important to the functioning of a democratic society. Why would that be, or why would Knox think that it would be, anyway? Option #3 Philotyranny Following Lillas cautionary tale, are intellectuals in the Humanities especially susceptible to philotyranny, or just especially good at it? To what extent is the current phenomenon of cancel culture an example of the danger of philotyranny? Option #4 The Encomium as Advertising Consider the "Encomium of Helen" as a piece of rhetoric rather than a contribution to legal theory, or moral evaluation. If the speech is construed as advertising for a Sophistic school of speechmaking, for lessons in the art of persuasion, then how is that advertising supposed to work? How are people being persuaded to pay a very considerable amount of money to enroll their children in the school of persuasion? Presumably, some people in the audience will be persuaded by the speech and subsequently convinced that Helen was wrongly accused. And perhaps some people will not be so convinced. In which group are prospective clients tuition-paying parents expected to fall?
