Throughout the Reagan-Bush era, the U.S. Supreme Court was characterized by an ideological shift toward the right. The Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, however, have each had the opportunity to nominate new justices and re-shape the Court. For example, in 2020 after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, the Trump administration replaced her with Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a conservative Justice. Many felt that because of Barrett's strong Catholic upbringing, she might tilt the Court toward an anti-abortion stance. This summer President Biden is replacing Steven Breyer with Ketanji Brown Jackson, a liberal Justice, who many feel will push the Court to the left in terms of criminal justice and sentencing disparities.
