  1. Explain the essential hardware devices used in a simple LAN

FEEDBACK

You have covered a good range of hardware. You just need to expand some of your answers to form full explanations. It may help to revisit Wednesdays slides and remember: Explanations need the How? and Why? aspects.

MY ANSWERS

Before moving towards essential hardware devices user in LAN, let's first try to know what is LAN.

A local area network or LAN is a group of computers and devices that share a communication line or wireless link to a server. As the name suggests, LANs are confined to a specific geographic area, like a building of office space. The most common link connections go through ethernet cables and wifi. once plugged in or connected to an office, users can access business resources like company printers, email, internet, and shared files and storage.

LAN's are comprised of three elements as follow:

=> A modem with an internet connection.

=> A router that lets other devices connect.

=> Wifi access points.

Some devices combined these functions into one device. Alternatively, switches are sometimes used to break up an Ethernet connection into multiple connection points. Wired Ethernet LAN connections are dominant in most enterprises, but the growing bandwidth and flexibility of wired LANs make them affordable options for industries and organizations where users rely heavily on mobile devices, like hospitals. LAN's serve all types of workplaces. from three users in-home office to hundred of users in a central corporate office. but for even wider geographic networks, like a company with an office branch and central headquarters elsewhere, multiple LAN's connect to form a wide area network or WAN.

so, a local area network or a LAN is a computer network that connects different devices so that they can exchange information. regardless of its size a LAN in certain devices and other components, so it can operate.

LAN need the following hardware in order to operate:

=> Hosts:

Hosts are devices that can send or receive data, for example, computers and servers. usually one can find two or more hosts on a LAN. one can differentiate these hosts with their unique IP addresses, but be careful because the term host can be used in a variety of contexts. for example, network hosts and web hosts, web hosts are the providers that store websites on their servers.

=> NIC:

Each user device needs a network interface card known as NIC, this card transforms data into electronic signals which travel across the network. each device with a NIC has its own MAC address. a MAC address is a unique number just like a user's telephone number or social security number (SSN).

=> Network Equipment:

Devices that duplicate, repeat or split the signal from hosts, in wire networks those are called switches, routers, and hubs. if one uses the postal analogy these network devices are the post office buildings. the building that receives packets, reads the addresses and sends them away to their end locations. hubs and switches are commonly used to connect segments of land while routers typically connect different LANs together.

=> Network Medium:

The user also needs a proper medium for packets to travel from one device to another, wired networks need cable, the most common cable one can use is called UTP or unshielded twisted pair. the name already tells that the cable consists of unshielded wires twisted around each other. It is used extensively in lands because of its simplicity and low cost but for larger distances, fiber optic cables are better options.

=> Adapters:

Cables physically end with adapters, those adapters are then connected to network equipment. The most common connectors used in LAN are called rj45, visually they look similar to an old-fashioned telephone plug.

=> Software:

Every device needs software to transform packets of data into segments and put their data into a structure called a packet. the destination computer receives a packet and interprets it into meaningful information.

=> Protocols:

Protocols are the set of rules that govern how data is transmitted over a LAN. the most common protocols used in the local network or IP, TCP, UDP, ARP, and DHCP.
