You have synthesized a pure molecule with molecular formula SOF4. However, you remember that it has two possible isomers ) and are trying to determine which isomer you have synthesized. Both isomers have distorted trigonal bipyramidal structures but one has the oxygen atom in the equatorial position and the other has oxygen in the axial position.
a) Draw the two isomers and show all rotation axes and mirror planes
b) You obtain an IR spectrum of your pure SOF4 compound and first analyze the SO stretching region of the spectrum. You find 1 peak that is asymmetric A1 stretch. Show your work to explain why this information may NOT be enough to determine which isomer you have obtained
c) You next turn to the S-F stretching region of the spectrum and find 3 peaks corresponding to the IR spectrum. Is this enough information to distinguish the 2 isomers? If so, which isomer have you purified? Include in your answer the number of bands and the symmetries of the modes you would expect to see in this S-F stretching region for the two different isomers.
d) Pick either isomer. How many stretching modes would you expect for the molecule? How many bending modes?
