Task:

Choose a current issue of interest that is reported in the popular media, in which mathematics is used in the reporting. Select at least twoAustralianmedia reports and use a critical numeracy lens to analyse how mathematics is used to inform or obscure the issue. Describe how the process of mathematisation helps to read the world with mathematics using this issue as an example.

Then make a activity for school students that engages them in a similar process, either within a mathematics lesson or in an across-the-curriculum activity. This planned activity for students should be designed to enable them to become numerate beyond the mathematics lesson, promote critical thinking and show the power of mathematics in understanding and addressing current issues. Explain and synthesise how the chosen activity creates opportunities within and out of the curriculum environment to develop numeracy and mathematical thinking skills among students.
